Hi Richard, stumbled across this here in 2026 - amazing post, and a lot of real wisdom there. There's a burgeoning group forming on Discord - link from the https://psion.community website - both geeking out on old Psion kit and trying to understand the user experience that made these such iconic devices. I'm using my Ericsson MC218 daily in my work as a doctor in Genomics, and loving it. I also have a 3mx and a smattering of other Psion machines, lovingly maintained. They're such cool devices, but the lesson is that it's not the modernity of the chips or tech, but the *workflow* that drives the productivity.

August 2024.

Repeatedly tempted by ancient small solutions for portable writing, despite having a fairly luggable M3Max 14" MacbookPro.

There are a couple of Psion 3a's in great condition going locally.

Any reason this won't work:

Psion 3a Psion Serial adapter/cable (D9) $5 RS-232(D9) to USB cable MacbookPro ???

Assuming the D9 end of the Psion RS-232 unit should be voltage compatible with the USB adapter?

Cheers!

I was still able to sync my Psion 5MX and port my tasks into Outlook on a Surface Pro2 Windows 8 platform. Unfortunately my screen cable broke for the 4th time since ownership back in 2000 and I haven't sent it back for repair yet. However, I still run the Symbian EPOC Emulator on my 64bit Windows 10 ver 2004 Computer, No probs!

Hi Stephen, thanks! Yes I've been talking to Alex actually, there is a Slack group you can join if you message him. We were playing around with a prototype SSD card reader. I was very tempted to create a polished Mac product and some hardware for it but not sure the level of interest - it would require quite a bit of effort and time!

Hi Richard, Great post! I’ve a Psion 3a, 3c, 5 and just picked up a German 5 MXPro. The keyboard on the ‘5’s’ is about as good as it gets. Would you divulge more detail? I’ve a Mac G5 that I’d love to connect to either the 3c, or the 5MXPro. I had wondered whether you could do this via an SSD. Alex Brown is trying to do something similar on Hackaday & FaceBook.
I’ve wondered whether the infrared could be replaced with BlueTooth.
Love to hear from you
